About Amumara
Mbaise, which in the Igbo
(also spelt "Ibo" and pronounced E'bO) language
means "five towns", is located in Imo State in the southeastern
part of Nigeria. The five towns that make up Mbaise are Agbaja, Ahiara,
Ekwerazu, Ezinihitte and Uvuru. The towns are grouped into three local
government areas (LGAs), namely: Aboh-, Ahiazu- and Ezinihitte-Mbaise LGAs.
Amaumara (or Amumara) is one of the autonomous communities located in
Ezinihitte.
The People and Land
Amumara is further made up
of the following villages (not listed in any particular order): Abu,
Isiama, Ndem, Obibi, Okohia, Okpanku (which includes Umuchie), Okwuta,
Otulu (which includes Umuokwo), Ubahi and Umuokpo.
With an estimated population
of over 25,000 people and 50 square miles, Amumara is one of the most densely
populated areas in Mbaise. The Imo River, one of the Niger River
tributaries, runs through Amumara, creating a natural coastline of over 5
miles on the town's western part bordering Umuokpo, Okpanku and Okohia.
For the most part, the coastline is made up of sandy beaches, mangrove
swamps, lagoons and coastal hills.
Igbo is the official language of the Amumara people. Majority of the
population are Christians; the rest follow traditional beliefs.
